Dungeon Siege II - Boss Encounter - Dark Wizard Triad

Fantasy game art from Dungeon Siege II.

The player first encounters the Dark Wizards in the icy Azunite Catacombs where Princess Evangeline is held in their power. There, the coven of four disperses, leaving only one to deal with the would-be heroes and rescuers. After the defeat of this lone Wizard, the remaining three Dark Wizards confront the hero together later in the story.

If you do not interrupt the initial cutscene, chances are that the script will have the Death-Magic Wizard moving into position while the other two invoke their Crystal Shields and begin summoning the very powerful energy- creature "Xzeihoranth". But if you do interrupt the cutscene by pressing ESC, all three wizards will be in place, invoke their shields, and then freeze in position while summoning and maintaining the Xzeihoranth.

If you are daring and can survive the attacks of the Xzeihoranth, a creature possibly six or more levels stronger than you, you will notice that while they maintain the Xzeihoranth the Dark Wizards take no other action. You can therefore run around destroying their crystal shields and taking them down one by one.
When one of them dies, the summon is disrupted, the Xzeihoranth thankfully disappears, the dead wizard transfers his strength to fully heal the other two, and the remaining wizards disperse to assault you with their powerful attacks.

Because their area attacks target every party member at once but can be evaded by simply running out of the visible magic-gathering area, this encounter can actually be easier if you control only one character, as you can more precisely direct that character out of the way not only of these area attacks but the powerful ground beams and short-range System Shock attacks.

The Sims Medieval - Wizard

Dungeon Siege II - Boss - Dark Wizard

Fantasy game art from Dungeon Siege II.

Of all the curses, plagues, and catastrophes ever to beset Aranna, the Dark Wizards are the worst. Without their urging, Zaramoth would never have begun his campaign of oppression and conquest, and without their strength, he would not have been able to continue it.
The Archmage and his five Undermages are the most powerful magical beings ever to exist. The greatest of the Azunite sorcerers were, to them, as flies to be swatted; even the great Edhel Counsel could do no more than defend against a few of their lesser attacks.
If, before the great cataclysm, they had desired to end all life, it would have cost them little effort to do so. But that was not what they wanted. Their goal was to control all of the magic in Aranna -- Even their great power was not enough for them.
Little is known about the Dark Wizards -- they have lived to an incredible age. They consume the fungus voldane, known to most as a deadly poison, in staggering quantities. Some speculate that it has sustained them through their long lives, others that it is the source of their great power. Edhel experiments with voldane have been inconclusive, and often spectacularly fatal.
The Archmage is the most powerful, but any of the five lesser wizards is powerful enough to defeat Isteru himself. When Zaramoth first came to power, it was thought that there were only four Dark Wizards, but later there were known to be five, though the fifth rarely took part in battle.

The first Dark Wizard encountered has several powerful spells:
  • Crystal Shield: To protect his frail form, the Dark Wizard conjures three floating crystals that surround him with a magical field impervious to all attack. Heroes must destroy these crystals first to nullify the field.
  • Reanimate the Dead: From the surrounding catacombs, the Dark Wizard can reanimate ancient fallen soldiers (Undead Azunite Infantry). Their giant size suggests they were once giants, possibly even Agallans.
  • Lightning Cage: Even from a great distance, the Dark Wizard can mark foes with a purplish halo. Over the period of several minutes, lightning builds from the ground beneath such marked targets and erupt in a spherical burst, shocking all within its radius.
  • Lightning Conduit: The Dark Wizard conjures a coruscating orb and launches it at a foe. When it connects, it channels electricity from the Dark Wizard to electrocute his foe.
  • Lightning Crystal: This conjuration brings forth a large crystal that is the focus of electrical energy. All foes are pursued by a sphere of static electricity which occasionally shocks them with lightning.
  • System Shock: When foes get too close to its frail form, the Dark Wizard can repulse them with a powerful arc of magic, catapulting them away and cursing them with a black fog of blindness.
  • Teleportation: In a blink, a Dark Wizard can escape a messy melee or close in on a foe to ensure a spell connects. If you watch closely, the Wizard seems to dissolve into a smoky form, project it to its destination, and reform there.

Dungeon Siege II - Boss - The Archmage of Valdis

Fantasy game art from Dungeon Siege II.

Valdis has a circle of powerful mages in his regime, the leader of which is his Archmage. He wields magic more powerfully than any other sorcerer in all of Aranna. The Archmage is the oldest of the Dark Wizards, a race of undead creatures who sustain themselves with powerful magic spells and the fungus voldane.

The Archmage is deeply corrupt, and seeks power for his own sake. His mental and psychic power is great, but he has very little physical strength. Thin and reedy, he relies on magic to keep him safe. He is a coldly intimidating person. The Archmage is Valdis' right-hand man and advisor, and may be the one responsible for maintaining Valdis' enhanced physical size and power. The Archmage is always by Valdis' side and serves him now as he once served Zaramoth himself.

  • The Archmage has various powerful attacks, all of which can dispel any helpful enchantments ("buffs") on characters, as well as harm multiple characters at the same time. His powerful spell that creates ghostly rings and levitates bones into the air has a very wide, almost inescapable radius.
  • Perhaps the most interesting attack is the crystal barrier spell the Archmage can place over the various Agallan Obelisks in the chamber.
    • Normally, a character can touch an Obelisk to receive a temporary aura of invulnerability that can last quite a long time. With the crystal barrier over the obelisk, the character must not only run over to break the barrier (wasting precious time) but the spell can convert the powerful Agallan magic into a strange, spiky bolt.
    • This bolt travels slowly, but if it hits it will either dispel an Agallan Invulnerability enchantment granted by an obelisk, or kill outright any character not so protected -- even one rendered invulnerable by the "+drlife" console cheat code!
    • Curiously, a very short character (such as a small pet) can have the bolt pass harmlessly overhead, especially if they do not rear up to attack.
