This page presents samples of combat in Heroes of Might and Magic V, and from them you may see a sample of how creatures move and fight, and siege engines smashing castle walls.

We may also present the same battle twice: The first time allowing the game AI to handle combat for the player, and a second time showing combat as controlled by a human player. Human player combat replays are captured from the 'Combat Replay' function of Heroes V.
For the most part, the AI does fairly well in small skirmishes, but is less efficient when the number of units increases and the overall complexity goes up. Also it handles sieges very defensively, and this can lead to more severe losses from enemy ranged units and spells, leading to the occasional unusual circumstance of player-controlled battles having an easier time against a superior army holed up in a castle

In some cases, the AI can lose a fight for you; sometimes, you can win even against a (theoretically) vastly stronger AI-controlled hero.

Wyngaal versus Kaspar: The following two videos show the same battle: Level 1 Ranger Wyngaal versus Level 24 Necromancer Kaspar. Wyngaal has a hard time because Kaspar's defense rating is extremely high, and even with comparable forces, Wyngaal is actually in an inferior position because his creatures inflict very little damage per attack.

Going Nowhere Fast: This video shows one of the strange heuristic errors. In what is probably an obscure case from an algorithm point of view, only one stack of Rakshasa advance. When the AI fights this battle, it fields all of the hero's units, causing a more 'normal' resolution where all the Rakshasa advance and devastates the army.
