The Awakening expansion introduces a unique darkspawn who calls himself The Architect. He is vague and evasive about how he came to be and how he has free will, unlike other darkspawn. When asked, he dismisses the question by saying that it is equally mysterious how some humans are born magic-users while most are not. The Architect discovered that by drinking a mixture of darkspawn and archdemon blood, the Grey Wardens who survive the Joining ritual gain a resistance to the darkspawn taint. By using Grey Warden blood, the Architect transferred that resistance back to darkspawn, freeing them from mindlessness and the enthralling call of the Old Ones that drives them to waging genocidal war.
