The game does not follow the canonical ending to the original novel (Le Fantôme de l'Opéra), where the Phantom voluntarily releases Christine to marry Raoul. Instead, the history alluded to as you play through the game suggests Christine eloped with Raoul and the still-jealous Phantom destroys the opera house.
